High dollar rate impacts Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector

The high dollar rate is pushing major pharmaceutical groups in the country to demand cash payment for supplies to health facilities in the country.

At a news conference in Accra the Ghana National Chamber of Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana, and the Pharmaceutical Importers & Wholesalers Association of Ghana, lamented the rising cost of production as a result of cedi depreciation. The local currency has been on a downward spiral over the past couple of months, losing over 45% of its value to the US Dollar.

WADR’s Accra correspondent Eric Mawuena Egbeta has been finding out the potential impact of the decision of the group with Lucia Addae Ntiri, the executive Secretary of Pharmaceutical manufacturers Association of Ghana.
