Religious leaders in Guinea are urging for dialogue between the government and trade unions as workers launched a national strike in Conakry on Monday.

The strike, which led to the closure of businesses and disruptions in the mining sector, revolves around demands for increased wages, the removal of internet restrictions, and the release of a detained trade union leader.

The capital, Conakry, witnessed deserted streets, closed banks, and quiet markets during the strike.

The deployment of security forces at major road junctions resulted in a tragic confrontation with protesters, leading to the unfortunate death of two people.
