Guinea’s President Alpha Conde called for calm on Wednesday as opposition protests over initial results from Sunday’s election, which showed him leading the field, turned deadly.

Security Minister Damantang Albert Camara said at least six people were killed, including two police officers, and many injured when supporters of Conde’s main rival Cellou Dalein Diallo set alight piles of old furniture and burned tyres in some opposition neighborhoods of Conakry.

He said there were also clashes in opposition strongholds outside the capital. Two people died in Kissidougou, a city in the southeast of Guinea, about 700 km from Conakry.

In a statement to the nation, Conde pleaded for calm and serenity, pending the outcome of the electoral process.

Meanwhile, the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) has announced a protest for Friday.

It says the protest’s aim is to call on Conde to resign.

Leader of the Liberal bloc party and member of the FNDC has been speaking to WADR about the political situation in the country.
