The national police on Wednesday fired tear gas to disperse members of the opposition in parliament who attempted to gather in defiance of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s decision to dissolve the legislative body.

Embalo took the step of dissolving the opposition-controlled parliament last week, alleging its passivity in the face of gunfire and clashes in the capital on December 1, events he later characterized as an attempted coup.
