Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has shut down four FM radio stations in Bawku, Upper East Region.

The affected stations are Bawku FM, Source FM, Zahra FM, and Gumah FM.

The NCA claims the decision came in response to recommendations from the Upper East Regional Security Council and guidance from the Ministry of National Security.

They allege that the stations played a role in aggravating the long-standing Bawku conflict, which has resulted in significant loss of life and property.

The NCA invoked their authority under the Electronic Communications Act (2008), allowing them to suspend or revoke licenses when national security or public interest is at stake.

The NCA further stated that the closure aims to curb the dissemination of information that could further escalate tensions and unrest in the Bawku area.

The move has drawn mixed reactions; with some supporting the NCA’s decision and others expressing concerns about press freedom and potential censorship.
