The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has shut down 38 retail shops owned by foreigners, predominantly Nigerians, in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua.

Tensions and clashes between GUTA and foreign individuals engaged in retail businesses have escalated in the past, leading to diplomatic strains between Ghana and Nigeria. This move is part of GUTA’s ongoing efforts to reduce the presence of foreigners in the retail market.

WADR’s Naa Dedei Tetey reports that the dispute centers on the influx of Nigerian citizens into the local market, where they engage in retail businesses that are typically reserved for local traders.
