In many parts of Ghana, the perceived failure of monitoring institutions and local assemblies in the regulation of mining activities, has forced community members to act. A youth group in Sing community of the Upper West Region of Ghana has closed down one of many sand mining sites in the community.
The youth group, who recently formed a task force to monitor the activities of sand miners, besieged a sand mining site in the company of some elders and opinion leaders. The miners were driven away and access roads to the site blocked.
Aziz Pelpuo with partner station WFM in the Upper West region has more in the following report.
