President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana has formed a five-member ministerial ad-hoc committee to evaluate ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining.
The committee will review the effectiveness of the measures to address the environmental damage caused by illegal mining, assess the current strategies, and policies as well as recommend necessary reforms to strengthen the government’s efforts across the country.
However, the Media Coalition against Illegal Mining convener, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey and other CSOs against Galamsey believe the extent of environmental devastation requires urgent actions to ban illegal mining activities rather than forming committees.
