The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced that it is monitoring the surge in acute respiratory infections, including those caused by the Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), spreading across China and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
In a statement, the GHS clarified that this outbreak is not due to a novel virus like COVID-19 but rather a seasonal rise in hMPV-related infections. The public is urged to stay vigilant and adhere to preventive measures to mitigate risks.
Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, assured the public that weekly samples from respiratory sites across Ghana’s 16 regions have shown no unusual respiratory pathogens, including hMPV.
The GHS remains committed to early detection and response, holding emergency meetings and collaborating with the National Influenza Centre to track potential risks.
