Chairman of Ghana’s Health Committee of Parliament, Dr Ayew Afriye, has dismissed requests to include dialysis treatment in the ailments covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Various groups, including the Kidney Patients Association and the minority, have urged the government to subsidize dialysis costs, especially after Korle Bu Hospital’s recent upward cost review.
Some have proposed NHIS coverage for kidney patients, but during the 2024 budget debate, Afriye cautioned that such inclusion would jeopardize the scheme.
He argued that no social health insurance scheme worldwide covers these conditions.
