Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that the U.S. has issued a warning over the country’s growing student visa overstay rates. According to U.S. immigration data, 21% of Ghanaian students stay beyond their visa limits—surpassing the 15% benchmark.
Speaking at a press briefing on June 26, the Minister said this development could lead to a potential U.S. visa ban if not addressed promptly. The warning underscores concerns about immigration compliance among Ghanaian students in America.
Ablakwa called on prospective travelers to adhere strictly to visa conditions, not only for the U.S. but all destination countries. “It’s about integrity and national reputation,” he said.
Despite the warning, Ghana remains hopeful that its strong diplomatic ties with the U.S. will allow for a resolution that avoids broad travel restrictions.
