Gambia Participates, an anti-corruption civil society group, commends the High Court of the Gambia for its recent ruling on a top government official.
Dr. Bamba Banja, a former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Water Resources, was found guilty of several crimes, including economic crime and official corruption, and sentenced to a mandatory two-year jail term.
The court also fined Banja for causing economic loss to the government, as well as receiving property to show favour.
Marr Nyang, Director of Gambia Participates, hailed the verdict as a significant step in the country’s anti-corruption efforts and hopes it will serve as a deterrent to others who may be involved in corrupt activities.
