Ghana’s former president and the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s administration for the alleged strained relations between Ghana and Burkina Faso.
In December 2022, President Akufo-Addo, while speaking to reporters alongside U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, claimed that Burkina Faso had hired Russian mercenaries and offered Wagner a mine as payment. This statement was met with strong disapproval from Burkina Faso.
During a media interaction in Ghana’s Upper East Region, John Mahama pledged to take steps to restore the strained relations between Ghana and Burkina Faso if he is elected president in the December 2024 elections.
