The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation was observed over the weekend. The annual event sponsored by the United Nations is aimed at creating awareness on the harmful practice which involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
While Female Genital Mutilation is banned in the Gambia, Lisa Camara with NGO Safe Hands for Girls says the practice is still ongoing.
