Two Nigerians and a Brazilian have been arrested at tha Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for allegedly trafficking 31.5kg of cocaine.
In a statement, the Ethiopian police released on Saturday said the arrest was made during a search on arrivals from Brazil on Friday.
During a search into the Brazilian woman who was heading from Brazil to Dubai via Addis Ababa, officials found around 17kg white powder as well as 666 pellets of cocaine that weigh 13kg stashed in her luggage.
A total of 83 pellets of cocaine, that weigh 1.65kg, have also been recovered from the stomach of the two Nigerian nationals, travelling from Brazil to Nigeria via Addis Ababa, according to police.
The case is currently a subject of further investigation by the federal police who have the three suspects in custody for possession of illegal drugs and trafficking.
Ethiopian police reportedly arrested almost 100 drug traffickers at Addis Ababa Airport in 2019 and 2020 alone.
According to the unpublished report from the Ethiopian Police Commission, Ethiopia has confiscated about 402kg of Latin American cocaine and 1377kg of cannabis in the past three years.
