In Senegal, opposition leader and member of parliament Ousmane Sonko who has been accused of rape is due to appear in court today.
Mr. Sonko who has been in detention since Wednesday last week, appeared in court on Friday for hearing but the case was adjourned to today March 8, 2021.
Street demonstrations have for days rocked the capital city of Dakar and other regions, resulting in at least three deaths and destruction of property.
Schools have been temporarily closed as the country braces for more violence.
In the wake of events, the Economic community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the ongoing violence and called on all parties to exercise restraint and remain calm.
The regional bloc – on Sunday in a statement urged the authorities to put in place necessary measures to ease tensions and guarantee the freedom to demonstrate peacefully, in conformity with the laws in force.
