In what appears to be the first since President Felix Tshisekedi of Democratic Republic of Congo announced a martial law to tackle violence, dozens of militia fighters this week laid down their weapons and surrendered.

During a ceremony in Congo's North Kivu province on Monday, around 140 men from various local armed groups sang and clapped as they handed themselves in to authorities.
