Supporters of Laurent Gbagbo and Charles Blè Gudé on Wednesday hit some principal streets of Abidjan to celebrate the International Criminal Court’s decision to uphold the acquittal of the former president and his youth minister on charges of crimes against humanity

Wednesday’s decision now paves the way for his return to Ivory Coast, where he remains an influential figure.

The two accused had been charged in connection with violence following a disputed election in 2010 that left at least 3,000 people dead.

The first former head of state to go on trial at the ICC, he had denied all the allegations over the bloodshed.
