While the clock ticks fast towards 29th January 2025, the Economic Community of West Africa State (ECOWAS) continue to intensify efforts in dialogue with the three Alliance States of Sahel namely Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger to rescind their decision and reconsider joining the regional bloc.

However, the three sovereign nations remain unfazed by their decision to boycott the bloc, citing various discrepancies and unfair treatment.

Despite their request to exit the bloc, the trio still looks forward to keeping trade and diplomatic ties with other ECOWAS member countries.
The recent inauguration of Ghana’s president, John Mahama, in Accra, brought these countries together on one soil. Hence, analysts believe that ECOWAS could leverage his influence to convince the trio to return to the block as the exit date, January 29, fast approaches.

Our guests on Citizens’ Hour, Austin Aigbe advocacy officer with West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) and the president of the African development Council (ADC) ING DR. Atsu Bright Sogbey extensively discussed the pros and cons of this development
