Calm has returned to Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), following a failed coup attempt.

Local media report that the attackers first assaulted the residence of Vital Kamerhe, the Congolese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy.

Kamerhe is also a government candidate for the presidency of the National Assembly. After the assault, the attackers took refuge in the presidential palace, where they replaced the Congolese flag with the flag of Zaire, the former name of the country under the dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko.
