The challenge has been thrown at Burkina Faso’s new military chief and his deputies to tackle expansion of terrorism in his country.
The appointment of Gilbert Ouedraogo on Wednesday came a day after armed jihadists in the country killed at least 14 Burkinabe soldiers, in a conflict that has lasted since 2015.
The violence has resulted in the death of hundreds of people and widespread displacement, with the international community calling for assistance for the victims.
The appointment of Ouedraogo has been welcome by some Burkinabe people who believe it will infuse new energy in the counter-terrorism efforts of the country.
