Benin rolls out national program to promote agriculture

The Beninese government plans to promote the agricultural sector through the national program for the development of plantations and field crops over the period 2021-2026, according to a statement released over the weekend in Cotonou.
 
 The statement said this program aims to optimize the development of cultivable land and attract national and international agro-industrial investors who can bring high benefit to the products of the country's sectors.
 
 According to the statement, the government planned to set up at least 670,000 hectares of large plantations in the twelve departments of the country.

 The crops selected are cashew, rubber, cocoa and coconut, and in terms of crops of interest, there is plantain, baobab, African apple, mango, avocado, shea, coffee and castor oil.
 
 The agricultural sector remains a major lever for the development of Benin's economy, as it contributes nearly 28% of the GDP and more than 70% of the country's export earnings
