Authorities in Benin have detained 12 individuals suspected of trafficking fuel to armed groups operating in the country’s northern border areas. The accused appeared in court on Monday, facing charges tied to alleged support for terrorist networks.
The suspects — all farmers — were arrested in early April in the commune of Banikoara while transporting unauthorized fuel containers by motorcycle. Each carried between 10 to 15 liters of fuel, which prosecutors claim was intended for militant groups.
Although the accused have denied any wrongdoing, the prosecution insists their actions indirectly aided violent groups destabilizing the region. The case has been adjourned until June 23 for final arguments.
