AU appoints reference group on transitional justice

A continental Reference Group on Transitional Justice in Africa has been appointed by the African Union’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security with technical support from the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation.

Fifteen Transitional Justice Experts from across Africa were appointed on the premise of equal regional representation for a maximum period of 3 years.

In the group are also youth, gender and TJ technical experts.

The appointment followed the launch of the Reference Group on Transitional Justice on September 10 in Port Louis, Mauritius by the AU and CSVR.

The launch was in part facilitated by the European Union (EU).

The roles of the Reference Group include but are not limited to program definitions, strategic advisory and quality control on various Transitional Justice interventions in Africa.

The group will also provide support for the realization of the strategic vision of Transitional Justice on the continent and the implementation of the African Union Transitional Justice Policy through the provision of technical support, civic engagement and advice to the African Union Commission, Regional Economic Communities and Civil Society Organizations.

According to information on its website, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation says with its support, the African Union will host the secretariat of the Reference Group and will report to the on the strategic objectives, activities and work plan.
