Amnesty International has called for the immediate withdrawal of the proposed Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 which has passed the first stage of the parliamentary process.
The objective of the Bill is to promote what its sponsors call proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian Family Values proscribe lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+), and related activities.
The human rights group believes the bill contravenes the principles of equality and non-discrimination, the rights to freedom of expression, association, and privacy, and the prohibition of torture enshrined in Ghana’s Constitution.
But as Atiewin Mbillah-Lawson in Accra reports, the legislators disagree.
