WEEKLY TOP NEWS – SENEGAL – A rising uncertainty ahead

This edition stays in Senegal. Peace and calm may have returned to Dakar and other parts of the country after a violent demonstration that claimed at least 16 lives. However, uncertainty lies in the days ahead.

Senegal no doubt is described as the beacon of democracy, envied by countries across the subregion with its strong institutions and sovereignty, but all of that may become a past if the needful is not done by the government.

In the week, the government limited access to certain messaging platforms, but many people were able to bypass the outage with the use of virtual private networks that mask the location of the user.

This restriction had an impact on the economy. But how much did the shutdown cost Senegal?

Find out with Francis Boniface on the first part.

Also, the violent demonstration and its deadly impact will continue to be on the front burner of discourse. A national dialogue has been initiated and expectations are high on the outcome. What does Senegal stand to lose if things blow out of proportion? How does the uncertainty influence the preparation and conduct of the 2024 elections and when will President Macky Sall make a declaration of whether or not he, is running? How do situations like this affect neighbouring countries like Mali, and Bissau Guinea which rely on businesses from this end?
Let’s take the conversation further as we are being joined by Mr Ibrahima Kane, a governance policy expert and Michael Nketsiah a political and international relations expert.
