Leading opposition United Democratic Party UDP in the Gambia has retained the only two mayoral seats in the country beating President Adama Barrow’s ruling National People’s Party NPP in Saturday’s mayoral and chairmanship elections.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced the official results on Sunday, revealing the UDP’s success in the highly populated West Coast Region, where President Barrow’s party suffered defeat.

The ruling NPP lost all seats in the capital city, Banjul, and its surrounding areas. However, it managed to secure victory in four out of the five chairmen seats in rural Gambia.
