The release of the 2023 World Press Freedom Index has shed light on the state of journalism in 180 countries and territories, coinciding with the celebration of World Press Freedom Day. The report indicates that 31 countries have a “very serious” situation for journalism, 42 have a “difficult” situation, and 55 have a “problematic” situation.
In contrast, only 52 countries have a “good” or “fairly good” situation, meaning that a staggering 70% of countries have poor journalism conditions, while only 30% have satisfactory conditions.
The rankings show considerable fluctuations, with some countries like the Gambia and Cape Verde performing well, while others like Senegal have experienced a significant drop in rankings.
Sadibou Marong, the Director of Reporters without Borders RSF West Africa Bureau.
