President of the ECOWAS Commission Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, has revealed that there have been more than 700 terrorist attacks between 2020 and the first five months of 2021.
This marks a doubling in the number of attacks, with more than 2,000 civilian and military deaths, and an increase in the number of displaced persons.
On Saturday, the 59th ECOWAS summit was held in Accra, during which regional leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to intensify the fight against terrorism and insecurity in the Sahel, and to strengthen maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
The ongoing Mali situation was also discussed.
