The World Health Organization has warned that the risk of covid19 resurgence remains high in several African countries due to poor adherence to public health measures, mass gatherings, low testing and vaccinations.
According to the UN health body, while three countries face very high risk of COVID-19 resurgence, 20 face high risk with 22 facing moderate risk, and only one country faces low risk.
The risk was estimated using seven indicators with data from the past four weeks, including COVID-19 cases per million people; the percentage of change in new cases and the percentage of the population that has received at least one vaccine dose.
During its briefing Thursday, WHO Regional Director for Africa. Dr Matshidiso Moeti, said a new upsurge of COVID-19 infections is a real risk in many countries even if the region’s case count in recent weeks appears to be stable.
