Niger republic today, Friday, marks a historic event as the troubled Sahel country witnesses the first transfer of power between two democratically elected presidents.

This is the first occasion since the country’s independence in 1960.

Mohammed Bazoum, the president elect was certified by the constitutional court after his win in the second round of the presidential election in February.

Mr. Bazoum secured 55.5 percent of votes against his challenger – former president Mohamme Ousmane who garnered 45.5 percent of total votes.

Recall, demonstrations broke out in several cities after the proclamation of the provisional results of the presidential election which confirmed the candidate of the ruling party, Mohamed Bazoum, winner.

Even though the opposition coalition had called for street demonstrations to denounce Bazoum’s victory, the president elect upon his win, promised an inclusive government.

Here’s an excerpt of Mohammed Bazoum.
