At least 4 countries in West Africa risk visa application sanctions by the European Union. The sanctions expected to take effect towards the third quarter of this year, have been applied by the EU which is accusing the countries of failing to cooperate to take back their deported citizens from Europe.

The sanction will see further restrictions on citizens who apply for visas particularly the Schengen visa.

In the Gambia, which is part of the affected countries, the EU has been President Adama Barrow's biggest ally since he took office in January 2017.

With his re-election bid coming up in December, President Barrow’s approach to the proposed sanctions may help or hurt his chances.

WADR’s Sankulleh Janko reports.
