The attention of many Ivoirians will be on the International Criminal Court today as it rules in the trial of former President Laurent Gbagbo and Charles Blé Goudé.

Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda appealed the decision to acquit the two Ivorian politicians in January 2019.

According to the Ivorian Observatory for Human Rights, which has been monitoring the trial in The Hague, three scenarios are possible. Either the appeals chamber confirms the first instance verdict. In this case, Gbagbo and Blé Goudé will be completely off the hook.

The court may also reject the verdict rendered on January 15, 2019; in which case the two men will again be referred to a chamber for the continuation of their trial.

In the third and somewhat more unlikely case, the appeals chamber may decide to sentence Gbagbo and Blé Goudé directly at its level.
