The Nigerian military’s withdrawal from smaller towns in areas where it is fighting Boko Haram is said to have placed residents at risk of attacks by the militants.
The army announced last year it was withdrawing small units and formations to form stronger and better equipped camps called the Super Camp.
This ‘super camp strategy’ sought to bolster the military’s combat posture and enhance its resistance to Boko Haram attacks on its bases.
The approach has improved the ability of the Nigerian military to counter Boko Haram, but it has also eroded the protection of civilians and their access to livelihoods.
Dr. Akinola Olojo, senior researcher, Institute for Security Studies tells WADR more about the war on Boko Haram and the super camp strategy.
