In Niger, 41 candidates have submitted their candidacies to the Ministry of Interior for the presidential election of December 27. The number is twice as many as in the last election which was 16.

President Mahamadou Issoufou, at the end of his mandate, hopes to oversee the first democratic transfer of power from one civilian rule to another.

But in Niamey, the large number of candidates concerns the population, especially the youth. And according to observers, the 25 million fixed for the deposit could be a factor of withdrawal for some candidates.

Soumana Iddrissa Maiga, journalist and political analyst from Niger tells WADR about the candidates vying to lead Niger.

The second phase after the submission of candidacies is the morality inquiry for all candidates provided for in Article 134 of the Niger Electoral Code.

About 7.4 million registered voters will participate in this year’s election. The electoral campaign for the legislative and presidential elections is scheduled from 5 to 25 December 2020.
