A coalition of civil society organizations in The Gambia has petitioned the Supreme Court to uphold the country’s ban on female genital mutilation.

The move follows a constitutional challenge filed by pro-FGM campaigners, including National Assembly member Almameh Gibba, who argue the law infringes on cultural and religious rights.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the coalition voiced strong concern over efforts to strike down Sections 32A and 32B of the Women’s Act.
These provisions criminalize female genital mutilation, which activists say is critical to protecting women and girls.
