The Malian interim government alleged France was pushing for the hastened withdrawal of the UN Mission (MINUSMA) to foster the growth of terrorist factions within the country.

The military, who assumed control through a coup in 2020, had formally requested the Security Council in June for the departure of Minusma, which has been stationed in the country since 2013, following a prolonged period of strained relations with the UN mission.
