The Italian government is calling on The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to prolong its deadline for the reinstatement of Niger’s ousted president.
The Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with La Stampa newspaper said ample time should be given to the Nigerien strongman to reinstate the ousted president.
His call comes as Niger’s airspace closed on Sunday by the Junta which will remain a no-fly zone until further notice as it awaits ECOWAS action.
The CNSP officials cited the threat of military intervention from the Regional body after they rejected a deadline to reinstate the country’s ousted president.
Thousands of junta supporters yesterday, Sunday flocked to a stadium in Niamey, the capital, cheering the decision not to cave into external pressure to stand down following the July 26 power grab.
While, in Abuja – Nigeria’s capital and headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States, the Legislature, citizens, and stakeholders are concerned about the proposed measures against the neighboring state.
These reactions were however heightened yesterday when the 7-day ultimatum set for the Junta to reinstate President Mohamed Bazaum passed without compliance.
