This edition of Wellbodi focuses on a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) named Lymphatic Filariasis also known as Elephantiasis.
The unfortunate thing about this disease is, not just that it is caused by parasitic worms, it is highly infectious, spreading from person to person through mosquitoes.
In sub-Saharan Africa, about 512 million people are at risk of being infected, while 28 million are known to be infected. Although the mortality from lymphatic filariasis is low, the disease is the fourth leading cause of disability-adjusted life years.
Our guest is Dr Folakemi-Cole Adeife, a Consultant Dermatologist and Venereologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos Nigeria.
