Ghanaian MPs divided over proposal to replace death penalty with life imprisonment

Parliament and stakeholders are divided over the proposed substitution of the death penalty with life imprisonment.

As a sovereign nation, Ghana has not executed anybody convicted and sentenced to the death penalty since 1993, but the trial courts continue to impose the death penalty on persons upon conviction.

This has led to a proposal presented to parliament to revoke it and punish serious crimes like high treason and murder with life imprisonment.
