The Nigerien Parliament adopted on Thursday the new national anthem composed by a group of national experts.

According to the parliamentary radio, the 149 deputies present all voted in favour of the bill on the new national anthem.

The Nigerien government had in March 2022 officially announced the country’s decision to adopt a new national anthem entitled “the honour of the Fatherland’’.

The government had at the time given reasons for adopting the new anthem which includes political evolution since after the second world war – a phenomenon the state said was similar to many French colonies in Africa.

While recognizing in it “all the values of attachment to national identity and peace”, Niger criticized the old anthem which has been in use since 1961 for certain shortcomings, in particular, paternalism”.

“La Nigérienne” was composed by the Frenchman Robert Jacquet.
