The 37th African Union (AU) summit concluded in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, yesterday with nearly thirty leaders in attendance.

Key issues on the agenda included the continent’s political and security situation, triggering concern from the AU.

A major focus was the political crisis affecting several countries, particularly the threat of military coups destabilizing the continent.

Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Guinea, Gabon, and Sudan were highlighted as nations currently outside the democratic path.

The AU reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for military takeovers, pledging continued support for restoring constitutional order.

The summit also addressed the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), emphasizing the need for enhanced regional security.

Despite divisions on certain issues, including the situation in the DRC and tensions between Morocco and Algeria, Mauritania assumed the rotating presidency, taking over from the Comoros.

This transition comes amid escalating political and security crises across Africa in recent months.
