In the Democratic Republic of Congo thirty people have been sentenced to death for their role in an anti-police violence to celebrate the end of the Ramadan fast in Kinshasa – the nation’s capital.
The sentences were handed down over the weekend.
Officials said, a policeman was killed Thursday as rival Muslim groups fought over the right to celebrate the Eid festivities at a major sports stadium.
Many say that the widely circulated images of the violence and of the injured police officers prompted authorities to call for religious leaders to be held accountable.
A summary of a cabinet meeting on Saturday also referred to the death of an 81-year-old woman in the hospital due to injuries she sustained during the deadly violence.
