The World Food Program warns that populations in West and Central Africa are expected to face acute food insecurity during the lean season between June and August 2026.

In a report published on Friday, the UN food agency estimates that around 55 million people will be affected, classified as living in crisis, emergency, or catastrophic conditions under the regional food security scale.

For the first time in a decade, parts of northeastern Nigeria, particularly Borno State, are expected to experience catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

The WFP says it has already halted assistance to about 300,000 children in Nigeria and may cut support to half a million people in Cameroon, adding that it needs 453 million dollars over the next six months to sustain essential aid and protect child nutrition.
