Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve.
The optic nerve is responsible for sending visual information from your eye to your brain and is extremely vital for good vision.
Glaucoma is usually caused when fluid builds up in the front part of the eye, increasing pressure inside the eye. However, glaucoma can happen even with normal eye pressure.
It is one of the leading causes of blindness in people over the age of 60 but it can occur at any age although it is more common in older adults.
Now this is where it gets dicey, many forms of glaucoma have no warning signs. The effect is so gradual that you may not notice a change in vision until the condition is in its later stages.
This means that there may be no symptoms at the early stages.
Glaucoma symptoms also depend on the type and stage of the disease. They may include gradually, patchy blind spots in your side vision, severe headache, severe eye ache, nausea, blurred vision, colored rings around light, eye redness, and in later stages, difficulty seeing things in your central vision.
