Tha new government in Senegal plans to set up a commission to compensate victims of deadly demonstrations from January 2021 to Febraury 2024.

Scores of people were killed or injured during protests following the arrest of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who was then an opposition figure and the postponement of the presidential election.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye said he was “particularly concerned” about strengthening national reconciliation.

This move no doubt has been welcomed by the larger population including Civil Society Actors who were at the forefront of the fight for regime change.

However, there are concerns about how this commission will work. Is it going to be a one-off commission? Is there budget support for such and how will this impact the country’s finances? What legal instruments will be used in this process and what about the accountability of compensation?

Our guests are Mr Ibrahima Kane. He is an AU governance expert and a human rights lawyer and Mr Elhahj Amadou Samb. He is the country director of BudgIT Senegal and a civil society actor.
