Ghana’s University Teachers Association (UTAG) is demanding swift action from President John Mahama to curb illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

The association has called for a state of emergency in affected regions, tougher enforcement of mining laws, and punishment for complicit political figures. UTAG warns that failure to act could lead to industrial action.
