US president, Joe Biden has ended his re-election campaign and endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
In a written statement, Biden, 81, described it as the greatest honour to serve but said his withdrawal was in the best interest of the party and the country.
This decision follows his challenging debate performance against Donald Trump on June 27. Biden will continue serving as president until January.
Kamala Harris, 59, expressed her gratitude for Biden’s endorsement, stating her determination to earn and win the nomination and unite the country against Trump.
She emphasized the urgency of the campaign with 107 days until election day. Despite garnering significant endorsements from prominent Democrats, Harris has yet to be officially nominated, with the Democratic National Convention set for August.
