One year after the first Kenyan police units arrived, the UN‑supported security mission in Haiti is struggling to reach its 2,500‑troop target. Commander William Ruto told the UN Security Council that only 991 officers—mostly Kenyans, with small contingents from Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Belize—are currently deployed, citing funding gaps and incomplete logistics contracts.

Ruto urged more countries to honor their pledges and supply essential gear, warning that the force’s limited size hampers efforts to help Haiti’s overstretched national police contain heavily armed gangs.

Gang violence has displaced 1.3 million Haitians, crippled hospitals, and stalled the economy, leaving much of the government paralyzed. The mission’s commanders say bolstering troop numbers and equipment is crucial to restoring order and preventing further humanitarian collapse.
