The United Nations has raised alarm over worsening food insecurity in Nigeria and fifteen other countries, warning that millions face the threat of famine between November 2025 and May 2026.
According to a joint FAO and WFP report titled “Hunger Hotspots: FAO/WFP Early Warnings on Acute Food Insecurity,” conflict, economic shocks, and extreme weather events are driving the crisis, while shrinking humanitarian aid worsens the situation.
The report identifies Afghanistan, the DRC, Myanmar, Nigeria, Somalia, and Syria as areas of “very high concern,” with Haiti, Mali, Palestine, South Sudan, Sudan, and Yemen at risk of catastrophic hunger.
Four additional regions — Burkina Faso, Chad, Kenya, and the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh — were also flagged as requiring urgent intervention.
